England Men win world 7’s and 10’s tournaments in South Africa
August 2024 saw a squad of 23 men travel to Johannesburg to contest the South African Deaf Rugby International Seven’s and Ten’s Tournaments.
First up the Seven’s and competition was tough with World Cup Seven’s runners-up Australia, Japan and South Africa providing tough opposition. The EDRU lads stormed into the final undefeated and didn’t disappoint in the final beating a strong and determined Australian side.
Following a couple of day’s rest EDRU was back in action at the Ten’s tournament. This time, however, it was a different story. Australia, keen for revenge, made EDRU pay for a slow start and for chasing the game in the last quarter. Final score an Australian win 26-5.
But after a regroup EDRU came out fighting against South Africa. The men played their game and ultimately triumphed in a close win 27-24.
Going into the final day it was all to play for. Having won again against South Africa, EDRU once again faced Australia for the trophy. In a hard-fought match England prevailed. Double champions!
Gloria Mills, Chair of EDRU commented: ‘The lads brought everything to both tournaments and their tenacity was rewarded. It is always inspiring to see players from the deaf community across the world coming together to compete in top level sport. ‘
Alongside the rugby, the team visited Sizwile School for Deaf Children. The squad toured the school, met teachers and then joined the children in a range of activities. It was a truly humbling experience that demonstrated the strength and importance of the global deaf community. Thank you to Sizwile School for their hospitality and enthusiasm.
Success all round! Joe Healy was named the well-deserved Man of the Series but congratulations go to the players, coaches and all involved in the tour.
Thanks also to our tour sponsors MAP Carpentry, Virgin Atlantic and Tour for Sport.
